Nowadays, we need English for almost everything!
Since we are kids that language is part of our life!
When we grow up and start having girlfriend or boyfriend, pen friends or friends from other countries, English, a Universal Language gives us the opportunitytocommunicate with them even if they are from the other side of the worl...
When we go to school, we start studying this language to learn more about that! Start the college and the important works! We start reading books, English books, articles on the Internet that are, frequentlly, in English!(this happens because English, like we refered before, is a kind of Universal Language, spoken by 341,000,000 of nonnative speakers around the world!).
Around 60% of programms are written in English and 90% on the Internet are also written in English.
When we start going out, and start going to the cinema or to the disco, we see movies and English songs and we need to understand that! They're English too!
The magazines, newspapers...English things are everywhere!
When we finally are adult, to find a good job we need to know to speak English! That is part of an important step ín our curricullum Vitar!
When we are retired and finally have time to travel and join our life, we chose countries, almost everytime, tropical countries, and there they have a strange language that even if we try we can't understand them we use English because almost everybody knows it!
Now look! When we are kids even the cartoon channels are English! First reason to speak that!
Almost every "intelligent" and "necessary" books are written in English! So if you want a good career you need to study so you need that books to you need understand English! Second reason.
When you are graduated and you follow a career like scientist, politician, economist or something about tecnologies you don't go anywhere if you don't know low to speak and /or understand English! Third reason.
If we need to make international calls we need to know to speak English (one more time because is universal). Forth reason.
If you travel for a different country without you're native language, you need to speak English because everybody understand that!
Nowadays we can look at the world like a gient tribe where everybody understands each other thanks to the Universal Language-The English.

Why do we learn English? What are the advantages and disadvantages? What's importance of communication nowadays? Let's find out

As everybody should know, English is the most widespread language in the world, anywhere we look, we see this language used in almost everything. It's used TV, computer, software, movies, songs, and so on.
We learn English communicate and understand the world around us. In the future, if you'll do a business trip to China, you have two options: speak English or Chinese! The best thing to do is learn English, because you can use it in every country you'll go.
We'll show you now, some reasons for learning English and you'll see advantages of this languages:
- To communicate with penfriends
- To travel to other countries
- To read books or newspapers
- To go on a student exchange progamme
- To surf the net
- Is part of the Curriculum
- To send letters and e-mails

This is only a small part of advantages of learning English. Now let's take a look at the disadvantages.
The main inconvinience is that the rise of English could be alarming for people who to preserve their native language. We think taht the development of English is very good, but the native languages must be used for the own good and protection of the culture of countries.

As you have seen, communication is essencial in our society, is what makes us understand each other and help us to take decisions. That's why we need a language that everybody understands and it is English.

We learn English as a second language, but why English, as opposed to other foreing language?

We could think that a Chinese is the most widely spoken language in the world should be this language that we should learn, but hinese is spoken little outside of Chinese communicaties so English is the most widespread language in the world.

The importance of English is not just in how many people speak it but in wath it is used for, English is the major language of news and information, look at the numbers,than three quarters of all telex messages and telegrams are sent in English, eighty percent of computers data are processed and stored in English, five thousand newspapers, more than half of the newspaper published in the world, are published in english.

English is alo a major language of international business, diplomacy, and scienc. Many international organizations have English as an official language or the official language, including the United Nations.

English is important to international travel, for example, in many hotels and tourist attrations at airports and in shops that tourist frequent is spoken English.

As we see, nowadays English is very important, but there are a lot of aother reasons for learning English such as: is part of CV, To find a job abroad, to get a well paid job, to travel to other countries, to work for international companies, to go on international meetings, on business trips and make international phone calls, is useful to chat with friends from different countries, to understand songs and computer software, to read books, newspapers, magazine or instructions written in English, to surf the net.... And many more things.

But to not be this globalization of English language prejudicial for the other languages and cultures? Well, many people think so and hve afraid that this expansion of the English language will take to extinction of their cultures and language, maybe a little excessive this idea however, realist.

We are walking more and more for a "global village" and the English is the language chosen to speak on this "village" therefore the English is so important.

Dear Carol,

Maybe, he doesn't love you as much as you love him because after you broke up he got envolved with an other girl. I understand you, but you should keep apart until the baby is born and let him follow the baby during its first months. During that time, maybe, you will meet someone special with whom you will fall truly in love.

Don't forget, that even if you get together again, he will have to share his love and care with you, with his child and, maybe, the chid's mother.

Dear Carol Smith,

I understand all the worries this problem caused on you because it's a delicate situation wich deserves very care.

You have to talk with your boyfriend and see if you really want to be together besides all the adversities, because it's very serious to stay with a person who already has a son, and understand that is a huge responsability, to raise a son who isn't yours. After that comes the most difficult part: the talk with your parents.

Your boyfriend and you have to show all the reasons why you should be together and tell them you're in love and no one should try to separate you. You also have to explain the situation of his son and all the hard work you will do to give the basics need to the child. You have to convince them you will only be happy together and nobody can change that.

However, there is the possibility that your parents don't accept your love and the sacrificies you are capable to do. In this case, you will have to decide if you want to be loyal to your parents or to your boyfriend. This choice only depends on you and I can do nothing to help you here, it's your decision, I know it's hard but this is the only way.

I hope my advice will help you and I'm sure you will take the best decision for your happiness.

I am writing you this letter to try to help you to solve your problem. What I can advice you to do is to forget your old boyfriend and follow with your future, because he is going to have a child and if you are you willing to help him in it you will only spoil your future.
Moreover create a child is a very complicated situation. With your age, you don’t know all good things that exist in the world. I know that what you are experiencing is not easy, but believe me, if you commit this mistake, you can lose your family forever, and the family is the best thing you can have.
You are still very young and new loves won’t miss!
This is my opinion but you have to think well about what you really want.

It seems like everyone my age (and younger!) is progressing with their love life, and I haven't even had my first kiss!

One of the most important cultural aspects of one country is the traditional food.

If you are always available to experiment new things, and if you never know what do to lunch or to dinner, we give you a suggestion: try a traditional Portuguese meal.

This soup is typical of north of Portugal, but it’s very spread in all country – it’s probably the most popular soup in Portugal.

Caldo Verde

Ingredients:

Preparation:

Boil the potatoes, jointly with onion, pork sausage and salt in 2lt of water. When finish boiling, removing the pork sausage and pass the rest with mixer. Whenit starts to boil, add the cabbage and a little olive oil. Let it boil just a few minutes. Cut to pieces the pork sausage and put them in soup plate.

Cozido à Portuguesa

Ingredients:

Preparation:

In a big pot, boil in water, all meat. The salty meat should be put to soak a few hours before boiling. Wash the cooking water with a little of olive oil and season as you please. Then of boiled take off the sausages, after the pork meat and just in the end, the beef. In this water of meats, put vegetables before mentioned. When boiled, take off pot of the stove, leaving the vegetables inside. To serve, cut meat, lay out in a plate with respective legumes. You can accompany with white rice, if you want.

Bacalhau à Brás

Ingredients:

Preparation:

First of all, you have to cut potatoes as straw and fry them. In the meantime, you can cut the garlic and mix it with the olive-oil. Take it the fire( cook) and join in the unwoven codfish, the potatoes and the eggs, that should be previously beaten and tempered with salt and pepper. When the eggs are boiled, you put the codfish in one dish and serve it still warm and decorated with black olives.

Other dessert that we suggest is the Sponge-Cake. This is a symbol of Margaride (Felgueiras). The first Portuguese going to the Japan take with them one sponge-cake’s receipt and this became one of the most traditional desserts of Japan.

Ingredients:

Eggs | Sugar (as weight in sugar as in eggs) | Selfraising flour (the weight in flour is ½ of the weight in eggs).

Preparation:

First of all, you have to separate the yolks of the whites. After this, you should add the sugar to the yolks and beat until you obtain a homogeneous mixture.

Afterwards, you must add up the flour to the mixture and beat it again. You have to beat the whites and join it to the compound. Finally you have to put the past in the tin, previously greased and sprinkled with flour, and take to the stove. Let cook until the cake obtains colour. When this happens, the sponge-cake is ready!

Did you like it? Well is better to try, it’s really good…

On the 1^st of June, we celebrate Children's Day. This day pays tribute to all children of the world.

The child is a very beautiful being, but unfortunately there are children that are victims of violence and racism, children that haven’t access to the essential things, innocent children that suffer with the war…

Children are the future. They have right to grow with health, love and understanding, to be protected against the exploitation and cruelty, to be fed, to be given a proper house and medical assistance and they have the right to education. All children deserve to be happy!

Children Learn What They Live

If children live with hostility,

First Cultural Days in Escola Secundária de Felgueiras...

On the 18th and 19th May, we had the first Cultural Days in our school.

The cultural Days were an event that provided many activities to all community (students, teachers, parents…).

During these two days it was possible to attend a match of masculine and feminine Futsal, a game of Football between parents and teachers, to watch films, to see children’s theatre, to participate in lectures and conferences, activities of the academy (aerofit, aerobic…), to attend Arraial Minhoto, the concert of the Banda de Música Ligeira da GNR and the concert of other groups, as for example, Da Ruthless.

Da Ruthless is a group that has two boys of our class, who with their guitars and voice had captivated the interest of the public.

With this fantastic event the school promoted its educational offers and provided all the community pleasant moments. It was a great time to forget a little bit our responsibilities and to relax as well… A different day…

Rock in Rio...

It's the biggest music festival of all times. It was realized at the first time in Brazil in 1985, and it was held for the men whose name's Roberto Medina. One day this men decided that his country (Brazil) had all conditions to get involve in a project that would bring the best music stars of all world to a local that later was named “Cidade do Rock” (Rock city) with the biggest platform of all world! This festival internationalized with the first edition of Rock in Rio – Lisboa (in Lisbon, Portugal) in 2004 and brought some stars like: Paul McCartney, Ben Harper, Evanescence, Foo Fighters, Moonspell, slipknot, Metalica, Sugababes, Britney Spears, Black Eyed peas, Ivete Sangalo, Alicia Keys, etc. And it came back in the last year (2006). This festival become known because the idea of the businessman Medina, that donated a part of the festival revenue destined for social projects and festival resort to solar panels for energy production for the assembly and disassembly of the platform. So it was named as “Rock in Rio Por um mundo melhor” (Rock in Rio for a Better World) Medina announced that the next festival will be in Madrid – Spain and in Lisbon - Portugal in 2008 and one more time will be a stage for many world stars!

We can think that we are very proud of our country and our landscapes. But if you have an opportunity, you will realize that we have many reasons to say so.
Look at your country.

There are many beautiful and wonderful landscapes, as you can understand from the previous post… But now we will show you a wonderful small world that belongs to Portugal, AZORES!!!
Azores…What a beautiful place! This is an archipelago formed by nine islands, whose names are: Flores, Corvo, Faial, Graciosa, Pico, Santa Maria, São Jorge, São Miguel and Terceira.
Azores are a paradise for nature lovers. With fantastic forms of lakes and lagoons, marvellous view to the ocean, deep craters of old volcanoes, landscapes that keep the original purity and with all this green splendour, the Azores are synonym of an unforgettable experience.

Flores symbolizes one pearl in the Atlantic Ocean, with their beautiful waterfalls, and many landscapes. We can say that this island represents the light of this archipelago.

Corvo, further then the white houses that it is holding, it is very rich in geological phenomens, because in this island there are two lagoons that have been formed in the older craters of volcanoes. Corvo is the smaller island of this archipelago, but a beautiful place, too.

Faial is other island that is very famous for its very important volcano “Capelinhos” that was born from the depth ocean.

In Graciosa there is another volcano which is inactive so we can go down and appreciate its bottom.

Pico is considered the highest point of all Portugal including the continent and the two archipelagos: Madeira and Açores.

Santa Maria and São Jorge are other islands very rich of beautiful places.

São Miguel has got many monuments and fantastic scenery. It has an excellent, rich gastronomy and the craftwork.

Terceira is a biggest heritage that nature brings to us, with all the power of life.

We can use many words to describe these wonderful islands. In spite of being very proud of this archipelago, we have never visited this place. However, we know we will go there.

We invite all of you to visit this incredible place!

Our flag, our nation…

The Portuguese flag has a great symbolism about the Portuguese history, a country with more than 800 years of history.
Our flag is bipartite in two fundamental colours, dark green and red. In the centre, and to unite the two colours, there is the coat of national arms, edged of white and placed above the Manuelina armillary sphere, in yellow and black.
As I said, each part of Portuguese flag has a great meaning:

-The five blue shields represent the five moor kings defeated by the first King of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, at the Battle of Ourique;
-The dots inside the blue shields represent the five wounds of Christ when crucified; -Counting the dots and doubling those five in the centre, there are thirty dots that represents the coins Judas received for having betrayed Christ;
-The seven castles represent the fortified cities D. Afonso Henriques conquered from the moors;
-The globe represents the world discovered by the Portuguese navigators in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries;
-The green strip is meant to symbolize hope for the future and the red the blood of the nation’s heroes.

This is our flag, a symbol of pride, honour, hope and history, like one day Camões said: “This is my fortunate, beloved homeland”.

Seven wonders of Portugal

We live in a wonderful country, and there’s no doubt about it… We have great natural views, but also fantastic monuments, imagined and built by the human race.
This year the new Seven Wonders of the World will be elected. Beautiful monuments with great histories, in an event held in Lisbon, our capital.
To take advantage of this worldwide event, Portugal is also selecting the seven Portuguese, because in spite of being a small country, we have beautiful places with fantastic monuments.

There are 21 finalists, but there are some favorites:

Portugal – The Eurovision Song Contest 1993

As everybody knows, The Eurovision Song Contest is an annual competition held among active member countries of the European Broadcasting Union. Participating countries submit a song to be performed live television.

The Eurovision Song Contest 1993 was the 38^th and was held on 15^th May, 1993 in Millstreet, County Cork, Republic of Ireland. In this event, 25 countries had participated on the final round. In the end, Portugal was the 10^th with the contribution of a wonderful voice that is the one of Anabela with the song “Cidade Até Ser Dia”. This singer also became an actress, and she has shone in theatre, mainly in fantastic musical theatre plays.

"Cidade Até Ser Dia" is a beautiful, emotional song that transmits us magic and, at the same time, a hope to fulfil our dreams… I’m proud to be Portuguese, because of some wonderful sweet voices like this one. I must confess that whenever I listen this special song, a chill invades myself and my eyes start shining, sincerely, I don’t know why. For all these reasons, it’s always good to remember a proud moment for us, Portuguese… Close your eyes, and listen this pure deep voice. Enjoy…

The 25th of April – Freedom’s Day

The 25^th of April is a National Holiday in

Portugal

because it celebrates a very important date for us all... the end of a dictatorial fascist government.
On the dawn of the 25^th of April 1974, to the sound of the song “Grândola, Vila Morena”, of José Afonso, the Movement of the Armed Forces, that got the agreement of the main military units, began the military operations that led to knock down of the dictatorial regime and to the its replacement for a democratic regime. Without great resistance from the forces loyal to the Government, all military objectives were accomplished throughout this day, with the population on the streets, in Lisbon, celebrating with the victorious soldiers and putting flowers, red carnations, in their rifles. The most amazing thing of this revolution is that there was no bloodshed.
This event is known as the Revolution of the Carnation, the Day of Freedom!

Here you have some photos from the hall of KTC. KTC is short for Kalundborg 10th Grade Center - in Danish of course. Here are about 120 pupils for one year before going on to another education. The main reasons for being here are to try and find out what to do next year, to improve the grades from last year and to become more mature. Hopefully all of it.

We are organized in six classes who are having courses in Danish, Math and English. Other courses we are doing in other constellations on KTC. For instance we can choose German, French, Sport cooking, film and more...

Here class six is having English. We are looking at this blog for the first time...

We are living in Kalundborg, a provincial provincial town, right in the middle of Denmark. We are about 20,000 inhabitants living in Kalundborg or in the small communities surrounding the town.

In January 2007 the boroughs of Kalundborg, Bjergsted, hvidebæk, Gørlev and Høng were amalgamated into one borough (keeping the name of Kalundborg) with almost 50,000 inhabitants.

The church in the background of this picture is The Church of our Lady (Vor Frue Kirke in Danish). it is the only five towered church in Denmark. The church was built around 1170 by Esbern Snare. Esbern Snare was a chief and warrior who also built the castle of Kalundborg. The church belonged to the castle.

In old days jackdaws were called "kaa" and the name Kalundborg is supposed to be derived from that name = the castle by the Jackdaws' Grove (lund=grove, borg=castle).

Felgueiras

The city we all live in is Felgueiras.

It is a small town in the North of Portugal, not far away from Oporto.

Felgueiras is famous for its shoe industry .In Felgueiras there are a lot of shoes factories in the industrial area. Felgueiras has got a natural park, in Santa Quiteria’s hill, which dominates the whole city, sometimes people go there to play sports, or simply to go for a walk.
In our free times we go to bars and discos to have fun. In summer we go to friends or to the public swimming-pools.

In Felgueiras, we don't have much to do, it is a quiet city.
We also have a good Public Library where we can study or do some research work when necessary.

There are some monuments, such as roman style churches, and Mosteiro de Pombeiro is a national monument that has been recently recovered from partial destruction.

This is some of us at KTC (Kalundborg 10th Class Center) Denmark.

Week 11 some of us went to Barcelona while others went to go skiing in Sweden. This is the Barcelona team.
The students on this photo are between 16 and 18 years old and from six different classes. All are attending KTC for one year - for different reasons. Some want to improve the grades from last year, some try and find out what to do next year and become a little more mature before making the decision about a further education. - And some try to do all three!
We are looking forward to getting to know more about Class 11D and Portugal - and telling/showing more about ourselves.

A First Impression!

Great class, Great students!

11ºD! Our class has 27 students (9 boys and 18 girls).
We attend Escola Secundária de Felgueiras in Science and Technology. Our lessons are Maths, Philosophy, Physics and Chemistry, Biology and Geology, Physical Education, English and Portuguese.

We have high hopes and many dreams for our future so we all dedicate most of our time to studies and school stuff and “fight” for them!
We are great dreamers.

Some of us dream one day to become doctors, professional physiotherapists, engineers, nurses, chemists, astronomers, biologists, teachers, musicians and players and many are still being drifters.

Being a class with so many students, we have a lot of different interests. Some have a pop/rock music group (Da Ruthless), others are football players, models, singers, dancers, skate boarders, horse-riders, motocross riders and down hillers…
Girls and boys crash a lot, but we are always laughing!
